Pending Draft Legislation Targeted for Spring 2005
The Draft will Start in June 2005

There is pending legislation in the House and Senate (twin bills: S 89 and HR 163) which will time the program's initiation so the draft can begin at early as Spring 2005 -- just after the 2004 presidential election. The administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed now, while the public's attention is on the elections, so our action on this is needed immediately.

$28 million has been added to the 2004 Selective Service System (SSS) budget to prepare for a military draft that could start as early as June 15, 2005. Selective Service must report to Bush on March 31, 2005 that the system, which has lain dormant for decades, is ready for activation. Please see website: www.sss.gov/perfplan_fy2004.html to view the sss annual performance plan - fiscal year 2004.

The pentagon has quietly begun a public campaign to fill all 10,350 draft board positions and 11,070 appeals board slots nationwide.. Though this is an unpopular election year topic, military experts and influential members of congress are suggesting that if Rumsfeld's prediction of a "long, hard slog" in Iraq and Afghanistan [and a permanent state of war on "terrorism"] proves accurate, the U.S. may have no choice but to draft.

Congress brought twin bills, S. 89 and HR 163 forward this year, http://www.hslda.org/legislation/na...s89/default.asp entitled the Universal National Service Act of 2003, "to provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons [age 18--26] in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." These active bills currently sit in the committee on armed services.

Dodging the draft will be more difficult than those from the Vietnam era.

College and Canada will not be options. In December 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.

Even those voters who currently support US actions abroad may still object to this move, knowing their own children or grandchildren will not have a say about whether to fight. Not that it should make a difference, but this plan, among other things, eliminates higher education as a
shelter and includes women in the draft.

The public has a right to air their opinions about such an important decision.

Please send this on to all the friends, parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, and cousins that you know. Let your children know too -- it's their future, and they can be a powerful voice for change!

Please also contact your representatives to ask them why they aren't telling their constituents about these bills -- and contact newspapers and other media outlets to ask them why they're not covering this important story.

http://www.congress.org/congressorg/issues/alert/?alertid=5834001&content_dir=ua_congressorg go here to find out what you can do!

Not sure of what too write? This is what I wrote, maybe you can get some ideas from it, or come up with some good points of your own. You can use my comment post to add any ideas to help others out!:

Dear respective officials, the passing of these bills will affect the freedom of all Americas youth, the right for us to choose. We live in a time where our personal freedoms are starting to slowly being taken away from us under the name of "safety". For being a part of the population of young adults, I know that a good deal of us are against this. We are becoming less and less "ignorant" about what is going on in the world, and we don't blindly follow, we speak out on our opinions. So I ask of you, not only for the youth, but also their families, and in the name of freedom, to speak out against these bills. Please help this issue also reach the media. Thank you

"Those who would give up a little freedom for a little safety, deserve neither freedom nor safety."

[music |Goteki!!!]

My first Convergence! I cant talk long. GOtta go, woke up late! I will fill everyone in with the details when I can, I will be staying at a friends who has a computer, so maybe there.

Im excited about all the bands and people I am going to meet. I am worried that I might get stranded somwhere in chicago if I go somewhere after the main events, and that I will meet someone that I will end up liking and not be able to do anything about it because she lives in the UK or something (friend or something more) (because Im stupid like that) and further prove that its a lot better anywhere else than Chicago to find a girl for me....

Anyhow, I should be happy right now haha, I am off, wish me luck!....

Excerpts from the Bella Morte Road Trip [Mar. 16th, 2004|02:02 pm]

[music |My Dying Bride-"The Dreadful Hours"/"Raven and the Rose"]

Back in December a few of us from the Chicago/Michigan area Bella Morte family went down to Charlottesville, VA.
to meet up with some others of the Bella Morte family, to go see the boys live at the club night The Dawning in the Tokyo Rose.
Unknown to us at the time that it would be one of the last Bella Morte shows to ever be performed there, as the night shutdown a few short months later. Here are few photos from the trip:

The awesome Michael (PowerPuffPunk) and I standing in front of a cliff/valley we dubbed "The Valley de Morte" on the way into Charlottesville
(try standing on the ledge of a cliff with no sleep, and numb legs from sitting
in a cramped car, it's fun).

Myself with Ankh (right) and a friend of hers (both from Virginia and part of the Bella Morte family).

I also have a few beautiful shots of Virginia, concert photos, and other random shots. I will post them up in my journal sometime.

And Then...

Your name is like a magic charm

I keep saying to myself

My thoughts tangle up around you

Only you can break the spell

We could walk into the shadows

You could be my friend

You could hold my trembling hand

And then and then and then...

Your voice is the only sound I hear

Falling over me like waves

My heart beats in time with yours

Shaping every breath I take

You could say you need me always

You could call my name again

We could kiss between the trees

And then and then and then...

If you only knew I was here

I know it would be just like this

We could walk into the shadows

You could be my friend

You could hold my trembling hand

And then and then and then...

You could say you need me always

You could call my name again

We could kiss between the trees

And then and then and then...
